Why CBD Cosmetics are Good for Your Skin

CBD Butt Balm Bawdy Beauty

In recent years, it might be safe to say that no one is having a glow-up quite like CBD. OK, maybe Adele has turned her tears into sweat and is happily healthier than she’s ever been. But, hear us out, CBD continues to have a moment, especially when it comes to cosmetics and skin care.

Once only associated with the stoner plant it’s derived from, CBD had been looked at much in the same not-so-positive light. Today, through research and a better understanding of this non-psychoactive derivative, it has found its way into the wellness and beauty markets. You can find CBD in everything from sleep-promoting gummy candy to CBD butt balm.

But wait, is CBD in cosmetics legal?

CBD isn’t new. In fact, it was discovered in 1940 but its structure was not fully analyzed and understood until 1963. And while CBD was discovered more than 20 years prior to THC, THC has dominated cannabis research until recently. Both CBD and THC are components in the cannabis plant and cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug - meaning it’s illegal.

However, the use of CBD in cosmetics is not illegal. In April of 2019, the FDA even updated its guidelines to include clarification about CBD products saying that its use in cosmetics is not prohibited unless it causes “the product to be adulterated or misbranded in any way.” What this means is that companies can’t make false claims about what the product will do, they can’t use CBD that includes harmful ingredients, and they can’t make or fill the product in a deceptive way.

OK, but does CBD actually do anything?

As we mentioned, CBD research has really ramped up in recent years. A lot of this research has been focused on the medicinal benefits of CBD, finding that it does help some children with rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Further, it has been noted as beneficial for treating conditions like anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, arthritis, and inflammation.

But what does CBD do for the skin? There are several appealing benefits when it comes to topical applications including inflammation reduction, acne, pain, and more. And while delivery methods differ - oil, butter, cream, balm, or lotion - they’re all effective.

  • Inflammation is the root cause of a number of conditions eczema, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help these common chronic conditions but also prove beneficial for the occasional rash or irritation as well.
  • CBD is a great option for acne treatment. Coupled with its anti-inflammatory powers, it also has the ability to regulate sebum production by preventing the cells that create it from generating too much or becoming overactive. Additionally, it’s been reported that CBD has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties which can help prevent further breakouts.
  • We have an abundance of cannabinoid receptors in our skin, making it a great way to spot reduce pain associated with a butt-kicking workout, inflammation from skin conditions, or even joint pain.
  • Finally, studies have shown that CBD is an antioxidant that can help reduce the signs of aging by diminishing wrinkles, counteracting free-radical damage, and visibly brightening overall skin tone.
